======================================================================= Community Message from an RIT alum in Singapore ======================================================================= Dear friends and [members of the Myanmar Engineering] community, We had mentioned about foundation of the EX-RIT Student Association or Myanmar Engineer's Association on 26, Oct 2000 at the Burmese Buddhist Temple [in Singapore], for social and academic reasons. We now have a test case. One Myanmar girl named Khin Mi Mi Khaing, a poly [technic] student, had been hospitalised for brain tumor since 1 Nov 2000 at SGH (Singapore General Hospital). She was first operated on 3 Nov Friday to remove the triplet tumor -- the size of an egg. The operation was declared successful and she was put back in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) for close observation. But her condition suddenly deteriorated due to [something] swollen under the skull. She received second emergency operation on 6 Nov Monday morning 4 am. The second operation was not only serious but too critical as the doctors had to remove swollen blood clog from the brain together with some tissues of the brain cell and kept the skull opened, leaving the sufficient room for swollen. The doctors had no other choice; the swollen effect may press the brain to collapse thus leading to the end of the life. Last night, her condition was too critical as the doctors gave no percentage of recovery and the family was prepared for the worst. Even if she recovers, the likely scenaio is, she might be paralyzed or [remain in] coma. The family is helpless except praying for her life. We are very much concerned about her immediate future and survival. Now, we, as a community and association should offer help as showing we care for her needs. She was covered under poly student insurrance scheme but the maximum limit is only S$13,000 per case and now the hospital bill could easily wipe out the entire insurred amount. ICU cost S$950 per day. She was in ICU since 3 Nov. She had two major brain operations since then. The insurrance could only be claimed as a reimbursement (means the family has to pay first and then claim later). No one could predict how long she will need to stay in the hospital and in ICU. We are appealing and seeking help from every body who could contribute any form of help by financially, moral support or just praying for her recovery. Some poly students provided non-stop praying of Buddha's Loving Kindness Protective Verse (Myitta Thoke -- Metta Sutta) in front of the ICU by rotating turns last night.

I was there every day since she was hospitalised but I will be outstationed from 8 Nov Wednesday to 12 Nov Sunday on company's urgent matter. Please do understand my absence since I have to take the trip which is sensitive and important. I have requested Ko Sein Win (Engineer and volunteer) for personal assistance for three-four days at SGH for any form of help/need by the family should the situation deteriorate or if she passes away. Those who could spare time and are available, please do visit SGH and help Ko Sein Win and U Than Tun (Family friend) for donation and collect the funds on behalf of the association and family. We will give them only after we have collected a substantial amount. This is volunteer work. Even though you may not know them personally, we should try to help them in any way possible. This is in accordance with Myanmar's villages tradition and spirits (Myanma Kyay Ywa Delaid). Patient's name : Ma Khin Mi Mi Khaing SGH (Singapore General Hospital) Block 55-A (Building No. 5 and 5th floor), Room 20 Note: (Visitors are requested not to enter the ICU for the concern of any infection since her brain was kept opened and condition is too critical.)
